COLDPLAY have followed in the footsteps of THE CHARLATANS and RADIOHEAD - by giving away free music to fans.

The foursome will play free shows in London and New York, move their album release forward to June 12 and also have a free downloadable single up their sleeves.

Violet Hill - their new track from album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - will be available as a free download from their website Coldplay for one week starting tomorrow at 12.15pm.

The conventional paid-for digital release will follow on May 6.

And clearly not short of a penny or two, the band have announced preliminary dates for two free shows at London's Brixton Academy on June 16 and New York's Madison Square Garden on June 23.

Looks like it's time to get your lighters at the ready and start waving them to the follow up of third LP X&Y.
