JOHNNY DEPP will play kids’ favourite The Mad Hatter in a new film version of Alice In Wonderland.
The megabucks live-action fantasy, to be shot in magical 3D, sees Depp, left as he could look, teaming up yet again with director pal TIM BURTON.

Now that’ll be some tea party.

Oddball Burton cemented Depp’s place in Hollywood’s major league in 1990 by handing him the title role in quirky hit Edward Scissorhands.

They have since become a dream team with Depp starring in six Burton flicks, including Sweeney Todd and Ed Wood. But the Alice project is their most tantalising yet.

The out-of-this-world characters and landscapes created by English author LEWIS CARROLL in his 1865 novel Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland beg for the Burton treatment.

Eerie
Tim’s flicks Beetlejuice and Charlie And The Chocolate Factory each saw him weave an eerie magic.


My source tells me: “Tim has had designs on Alice In Wonderland since before he was famous.

“He has a knack for turning what seem like stories for just kids into gripping, spooky fables loved just as much by adults.

“He’s held out on doing Alice till he got a big enough budget. Now this film is financed by Disney so money won’t be a problem.”

Unknown Aussie teenager MIA WASIKOWSKA will play Alice, who falls down a rabbit-hole to be faced by all manner of oddity. Production starts next year, with the release set for summer 2010.

Disney produced the animated movie Alice In Wonderland in 1951.

But you can bet your flamingo croquet mallets that those hookah-smoking caterpillars and mad March hares will look extra-astonishing under the spell of Burton and Depp.
