RADIOHEAD - Live At BBC Radio Theatre

*****

IT had, said Thom Yorke, been a long day. Though any weariness in his announcement wasn’t apparent in his band’s performance.

Radiohead, always a band to do things differently, had taken over the BBC for the day with two special intimate shows for competition winners and us lucky invited few.

First they played a matinee show for 6Music and then, at 9pm, it was time for their Radio 2 evening performance, hosted by witty DJ Mark Radcliffe.

Gutsy

Introduced to the 300 strong crowd as ?one of the finest beat groups playing a selection of up-tempo party favourites some from the recent downloadable masterpiece In Rainbows,? the laughing band launched into a gutsy version of Bodysnatchers, with the three guitarists and bassist circling around drummer Phil Selway’s rhythmic beat lead.

All I Need and a divine version of Nude were perfect for the show’s location — the polite crowd glued to their seats, not making a sound, hanging on to every flawless note of Thom’s vocals.

And it wasn’t all about In Rainbows. OK Computer’s opening track, the rocky Airbag was a special moment with Lucky and The Tourist, from the same album, also played.

And the eerie electronic Everything In Its Right Place from Kid A provided the only slight blip of the night by having to be restarted.

The sweeping beauty of Reckoner and a delicate and utterly gorgeous House Of Cards were met by cheers and whoops from the crowd, and were the real sparklers of this magical night.

This was Radiohead as you might never see them, a real golden-ticket-winning evening. And with the entire concert plus a free live track from their matinee performance available for seven days after the show, the best bit is that you can relive it all again with a computer click.
